We know, we know, there’s nothing to do. It’s too cold, you can’t drive, your friends are out of town, you’re out of cell phone minutes, you’ve seen every episode of “The Hills,” and you’ve got finger strain from so much texting.
Still, that’s no reason not to enjoy your winter break. In fact, it’s a great time to do nothing but catch up on some movies.
You could hit the theaters for a matinee and save some money.
“I’m looking forward to ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks,’” says Ryan Simbro, 18. Rated PG, Jason Lee stars in this film version of the cartoon from back in the day.
Also out now is Will Smith in “I Am Legend,” rated PG-13. It’s about being the last human left on Earth ... maybe. Plus you can always catch the movies you meant to see and spend just a little at the Plaza 8.
Tina Simmons, Plaza 8 assistant manager, recommends “Superbad.”
“ ... It’s really funny,” she says. “Vulgar, but funny.” It’s rated R, by the way.
“A lot of people are renting the ‘Hairspray’ movie,” says David Dykes, with guest services at Hastings Books, Music and Videos.
Jessica Casey, 17, a senior at Lafayette High School, agrees.
“I liked ‘Hairspray’ a lot,” she says of the PG flick. And if you haven’t seen the original, she recommends that one, also PG.
Speaking of classics, anything from the ‘80s is worth the time, if not to see stars as teenagers, (think a young and awkward Sarah Jessica Parker in “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” rated PG,) then at least for a laugh (think “Valley Girl,” starring a young Nicolas Cage, rated R.)
“A lot of people disagree,” Tina says, “but I would say ‘Fast Times at Ridgemont High.’”
That one, rated R, stars Sean Penn before he got so serious.
And don’t forget Winona Ryder as the nice girl stuck in a mean clique in “Heathers.”
“‘Heathers’ is fantastic,” Tina says of the R-rated film. “I love black comedy.”
It’s kind of like “Mean Girls,” but people get killed and it doesn’t end well.
If you’re still not sure what to watch, look for some top movie lists. Amazon.com recommends “The Breakfast Club,” “10 Things I Hate About You,” “Never Been Kissed,” “Bring It On,” “Clueless” and all the “Scream” movies, to name just a few.
So you see? Even though it’s too cold, you can’t drive, your friends are out of town, you’re out of cell phone minutes, you’ve seen every episode of “The Hills” and you’ve got finger strain from so much texting, there actually is something to do during your break.
Just relax on the couch, watch a movie and enjoy it while you can.
