Friday night. The night after Thanksgiving. Many were back to work, many were taking it easy and a limited number made it out to what was a pretty good show for local alt-rock group Pompous Pilot.
Sure, a lot of that may have been due to the bar owner not getting the schedule in to the paper by deadline, but those who braved the cold weather and got the word through the grapevine were pretty pleased from what I could tell.
Of course, my normally not-so-punctual self missed Cupcake and Gretta. Darn the luck. But luckily, Pompous was on their game, even despite technical difficulties.
The last time I saw the Pilots, lead singer and guitarist Kiley Bodemhamer was, shall we say, a little under the influence (probably on some home brew). The show came off a little bit sloppy. This time around, they were much tighter, blending their experimental My Bloody Valentine noise with Radiohead melodies. The group was back to their original trio of Bodenhamer, bassist Sam Blumer and Eric Skeen, who continues banging his retro drums that have a cool ring sound of hollowed-out tree trunks.
About half-way through their hour-long set, Blumer managed to somehow break a bass string, greatly limiting his spot on fills and causing him to beat his bass like it stole something through the remainder of the song. It was cool to see him be a trooper about it, working his way up and down the fret board trying to find new ways to hit all the right notes for the rest of the set.
This unique branch of The Rogers' family tree continues to grow sonically. Hopefully, there will be more people to witness it next time around.
