Police officers deal with all kinds of people and situations that often times go unnoticed. The Central Neighborhood Watch Group, along with Sherwood Neighborhood Association, plans to change that.
On Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m., the organizations will hold an event in conjunction with National Night Out. National Night Out is America's night out against crime and is designed for communities to support local law enforcement. The event will be held at Sherwood Park located at 29th and Edmond streets.
Danielle Hunt, president of the Central Neighborhood Watch group, heads up the event.
"We just want to get folks to come out and interact with the police officers and law enforcement and show their support," Ms. Hunt said.
The group has a variety of activities planned during the event, including games, a raffle, a K-9 demonstration, law enforcement vehicles and a chance to meet local officers and firefighters.
While Ms. Hunt said the group's main goal is interaction and education, they also hope to raise $2,000 toward the purchase of a new K-9 for the police department.
The police department has lost two of its K-9 companions since December, Ms. Hunt said, leaving older dog Jimmy and young Sarik, who will both be at the event. The total cost for a new K-9 is $6,000, Ms. Hunt said.
"National Night Out is a great way to get to know the Police Department and what they do and what they need," Ms. Hunt said. "If people can't make it then, if they just turn on their porch light and just get out and know who their neighbors are, that helps."
