Hope you have been getting the phone messages. A true adventure and all is going pretty well.
Our days are full and this is the first time I found internet access.
Middlegate to Eureka, NV
Ate breakfast in a building that was built in the 1860s.
We are in the desert. The very dry desert. As we move east, the desert is greening up some and there are even a few tress in the mountains.
We had 60+ miles to Austin today. It was mostly uphill with a cross headwind (NE). The going was slower. It seemed to take forever to get to Austin especially since the last 5 miles was up the side of a mountain that took us an hour to get there (I am sure everyone can do the math, 5 mph up that hill).
We ate lunch and hit the road quickly as it was already 3 pm and we had to cross three mountain passes in the last 70 miles to Eureka.
As luck would have it, we went through Devil's Gate as the sun was going down and made it in town for supper with 10 minutes to spare (before the last restaurant closed).
A tough 135 mile day. Lots of climbing and sun but the temperatures only got to 87F. Too bad we had them while climbing the two passes near Austin.
A very strange thing happened today, while coming down Mt Airy Summit we ran into a good friend of ours traveling west on the Lincoln Highway. Just think of all the places I could be but I run into Thomas Faust in Nevada on Hwy 50.
All for now.
