Saturday, August 30, 2008

Police arrested a man employed at a local nursing home for alleged deviate sexual activity Thursday.

Buchanan County officials charged Shawn K. Akins, 33, with the felony of deviate sexual assault. The state alleges Mr. Akins forcibly sodomized a victim who had physical limitations due to multiple sclerosis. The case was investigated by detective Trenny Wilson after a call from an Abbey Woods Living & Rehabilitation Center employee Monday.

Abbey Woods, 5026 Faraon St., has been providing special assistance to those impacted, said Margaret Ritter, director of nursing.

“Staff and residents are pulling together as a family,” Ms. Ritter said.

Associate Circuit Court Judge Ronald Taylor ordered Mr. Akins to post a $20,000 bond, have no contact with the victim and return to court for an arraignment at 8:15 a.m. Friday. Court records indicated Mr. Akins obtained his release Thursday from the Buchanan County Jail after arranging to post the necessary bond through Linda Poe Bail Bonds.
