Congress needs to respond

to hunger in America

Just last month, the U.S. Department of Agriculture released its latest “food insecurity” figures and found that there were 36.2 million Americans who struggled against hunger in 2007. That’s nearly one in eight Americans. In Missouri, the numbers are just as staggering. In the USDA report, almost 13 percent of Missourians struggled with food insecurity. The report’s numbers do not include those who are facing tougher times in 2008.

Across our state, we hear more frequently about the increased demand at food stamp and WIC offices, social service agencies, and emergency food providers. This shows us that growing economic troubles are overwhelming our community’s first responders to hunger. Our community — and the nation — urgently needs a boost in SNAP/Food Stamp benefits in the next stimulus package. It’s been recommended by economists from across the political spectrum — both as a necessary support for low-income people and as the best stimulus expenditure, dollar for dollar.

The need is high, and it is necessary for Congress to respond. We are calling on our members of Congress to provide much needed support to these struggling families in the next stimulus package. Our communities need this.

Thanking all who helped

in sheriff campaign

I would like to thank all those who participated in behalf of my campaign to elect me for sheriff.

I found it to be a great honor and privilege to have had the opportunity to experience such a challenge.

Although the outcome wasn’t in my favor, it was a close race. During my campaign, I met a lot of good people who supported me in many ways.

I have grown to realize just how much I mean to my family, friends and the people whom I have served. My family has showed their love for me and I have to admit that was the greatest feeling of all.

As far as I am concerned, I did win in the campaign to elect me for sheriff due to the response that I received from my God-loving family. It was a true rewarding experience to learn what they think of me. The reward of it all will be when I can lay my badge and gun aside so that I can sit and look to all that I have to be thankful for.

My 29 years at the Sheriff’s Department have given me a lesson in life: “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.”

I also would like to say thank you to all of you who voted for me. May the forthcoming year be a good one for all.

Hunger
It's not the goverments responiblity to do anything but ensure the smooth flow of day to day life for ALL americans

It has been debated widely and i belive with much success that this is the same thinking that made the great depression much longer that it should have

that being said i would agree that somthing needs to be done about this problem, but goverment is NOT the soultion.
The caring and genruos(sp) soul of america is. When a call for help is put out for the food kitchens and the like we responed with the help they ask for. It might not be all they need but in these tough times the people are thinking with taxes possibly going up I might end up here too. Dont look to goverment to fix the broken stuff tell they to get out of your pocket and not to worry i'll fix it for you "WE THE PEOPLE" can do a much better job

Yes, government spends too much money paying people to "do good". Of course these people don't want to lose their jobs. And a stimulus package for people that don't pay into society. Something just not right about that..... We the working people are the middle-class........we are the ones paying for all the welfare benefits. Hunger, how in the world could anyone in America be hungry. I'm sure there are some ligimate cases, but by in large, I think people can just be lazy. I know that's probably shocking, but why work when the government can pay you to stay home and take care of all the babies.
