It's your call, Feb. 1, 2008

Friday, February 1, 2008

Editor’s note: In keeping with tradition, today is the last day the News-Press will publish “It’s your call” comments concerning candidates and issues in Tuesday’s elections. We invite your comments on other topics.

Am I the only one?

Why can’t we get some help? I live in Northeast Kansas, and of course everyone knows we’ve had ice storms here. I see in this morning’s paper where the farmers are going to sign up for some help. Don’t get me wrong, I hope they get it. But it seems like everywhere I’ve tried to get some help I don’t, and my backyard looks like a tornado. I’m in my late 80s and I just can’t seem to get any help anywhere I’ve tried. I wonder why. Because at one time I know I got some help in this area from FEMA when we’ve had a lot of floods. I do have heat. I do have lights, but I can’t seem to get anybody to give me any kind of compensation to help clean up. And I just don’t have the facilities and at my age. And I just wonder why we can’t. I know there are other places. And like I say, thank God I have heat and warmth and water. But I just wonder why we can’t get some help. I’m sure I’m not the only one.

A wake up call

I always thought Christians were a bunch of judgmental goodie-goodies. God just gave me a wake up call a few months ago, just like many other calls I fail to hear. Why is it when everything seems to go wrong I turn to anything else to make myself happy — shopping, eating, TV, computer, drinking and even drugs? Why did I try all these exhausting and complicated things and avoid just saying a prayer or cracking open a Bible? If you’re like me and you’ve tried all of these quick fixes maybe you could just say a prayer. It’s really worth a shot. Real peace is something I can’t describe, I’ve never had and now I can’t live without. Also, a big thank you to Frederick Boulevard Baptist Church for all their unjudging love.

Duh

It seems that your political complaints have to do with why do the candidates want change. They’re complaining about the candidates wanting change. Big deal. The thing about that is if you are a Republican going against a Democrat or vice versa, you are talking about change. Every four years there’s a comment about somebody wanting change. Why does that even deserve a comment or a call-in? Hillary and Obama are wanting a change from Bush. It’s going to be a political change. But when you’re going from Republican to Democrat or Republican to Democrat, it’s an automatic change.

Think about them

Ditto, ditto, ditto. Vote yes for the bus transit. I do not use the service at the present time, but who knows when I will need it. Give thought to all of the people who use that service.

You get what you give

I’m calling in about the potential tax rebates we might be getting here soon. I have one thing to say to the older people out there. I understand that times are tough, but with Social Security a lot of old people complain that they get hardly anything. But Social Security is not just some wonderful gift from the government. It’s what you paid into it and you’re getting it back now. So if you aren’t getting much you must have been lazy and didn’t work much or you must have worked under the table thinking you were being sneaky and cheating the tax man. This ought to be a lesson for the young folks out there. Save your money and work. Don’t be a bum. Social Security is not a gift from the government. It’s what you put into it.

If and when

The only situation in which I would vote for Hillary is if she were to run against her husband.

Why bother?

I would be interested in learning why go through the time and expense of a trial or a hearing if the sentence is only going to be run concurrently with the sentence they already have and doesn’t add anything to their punishment. Why go through the bother? I just wondered if anyone could explain that to me.

Why eat dirt?

“Eating dirt,” give me a break. There you go with your religion again. Well, if God did create everybody and Jesus was God’s son and Jesus cares for everybody in the world, then why are the people in Haiti eating dirt and we are not? It’s because of Jesus Christ? Well, I guess so. He must have wanted them to eat dirt.

To "You get what you give" - actually Social Security payouts to retirees come from current Social Security taxes paid by employees. These payouts do NOT come from dollars that were previously invested. It is a pay-as-you go program, which is one of the reasons for the future problems expected. Do your research before making ill-advised and judgemental comments.
