A Northwest Missouri Republican and a Florissant Democrat are going head to head in fundraising for the state treasurer’s race.

Sen. Brad Lager, R-Savannah, came out ahead this quarter, according to campaign disclosure reports that were due for all state candidates Tuesday.

Mr. Lager, the sole Republican vying for the treasurer post, raised $396,832, with $336,254 in cash left on hand.

Clint Zweifel tailed him with $393,836 in receipts and $281,980 remaining during the same period. The representative faces three other Democrats in the Aug. 5 primary election.

Andria Simckes, of St. Louis, raised $101,161 with $43,755 on hand. Arnold Mayor Mark Powell has raised $42,663 this quarter with a total of $7,482 on hand. Charles Wheeler, former mayor of Kansas City, took in $7,850 during the same period and had $1,851 on hand.

In the only contested state race involving St. Joseph candidates, Democrat Mark Sheehan continues to challenge incumbent Rep. Dr. Rob Schaaf for the 28th House of Representatives District seat.

Dr. Schaaf has raised $20,445 and has $16,804 on hand, while Mr. Sheehan garnered $10,445 with $8,702 remaining. Of note is one of Mr. Sheehan’s contributors, Heartland Health’s chief executive officer. Lowell Kruse contributed $325 to the Democrat’s campaign on June 20. Dr. Schaaf earlier this year championed a failed effort to increase hospital competition that many hospitals, including Heartland, resisted.

The other two St. Joseph races are unopposed. Reps. Ed Wildberger, D-St. Joseph, in the 27th District, and Martin Rucker, D-St. Joseph, in the 29th District, have no challengers.

The following are the amounts raised this quarter by candidates in area House races in the primary election and the amounts unspent:

4th House District: Incumbent Rep. Mike Thomson, R-Maryville, $41,076, with $26,401 on hand and Democrat challenger Richard Oswald, of Langdon, $575 with $543 remaining.

30th House District: Incumbent Rep. Jason Brown, R-Platte City, $17,500, with $20,028 on hand and his Democratic opponent, Mary Anne Baier, of Kansas City, $3,725 with $2,698 in cash on hand.

3rd House District: Republican Casey Guernsey, of Bethany, $15,725, with $13,410 remaining and Democrat Mike Hepler, of Browning, $4,858 with $2,922 remaining.

7th House District: Republican Mike Lair, of Chillicothe, $54,373, with $37,859 on hand, and Democrat Harry Wyse, of Chillicothe, $13,477 with $4,656 on hand.

5th House District: Incumbent Rep. Jim Guest, R-King City, $37,415, with $18,870 remaining. Democrat challenger Mike Waltemath, of King City, reported $1,892 for the quarter with $1,421 remaining.

No local Senate seats are available this election. The next reporting deadline for candidates is Oct. 15.
