If the New Nodaway Humane Society in Maryville, Mo., can find 100 angels, they will be in heaven. At least, for a while.
Economic woes, fueled in part by high utility prices, and an increase in the minimum wage have hit the shelter hard, said Mary Matthews, New Nodaway Humane Society board member.
“We are struggling financially,” she said. “We were kind of holding our own until utility and wage increases.”
So, Ms. Matthews has come up with an idea that she hopes will offset some of those day-to-day operating expenses. Called Angels 4 Animals, the program seeks at least 100 donors who are willing to pledge $50 a month to the New Nodaway Humane Shelter. That money will be used to pay for utilities, staff salaries, pet food, insurance and veterinary bills.
“It’s going to be used to keep the shelter open,” said Cindy Nelson, shelter director.
Angels 4 Animals has attracted about 20 donors so far. Donors can sign up to pay either on a monthly basis or yearly. Donations can be made with a check or automatic deduction from a bank account. Those who become “angels” will receive a free humane society membership, recognition at the shelter, special invitations to socials and an Angel lapel pin.
Although the shelter does receive some funding from the city of Maryville and a small amount from Nodaway County, it is not enough, Ms. Matthews said. There are few grants available for operating expenses, she added. But with 100 “angels” pledging their monetary support, the shelter will be guaranteed an additional $5,000 in operating revenue a month.
Even with the program, Ms. Matthews knows this may be a short-term fix. The shelter will have to continue to explore ways to make sure it has enough money to operate.
