TITLE: Mad Men: Music from the series Vol. 1 (EMI/Manhattan Records)
ARTISTS: 1960 period tracks for the likes of Vic Damone, Rosemary Clooney, Ella Fitzgerald, The McGuire Sisters, Bobby Vinton and other vintage performers.
STARS: 4 out of 5 Stars
SOUNDS LIKE: Uncomplicated 1960 period music in the time of martinis, bouffant hairdos and the space race.
The early 1960s were uncomplicated times compared to the multi-tasking, perpetually wired society we find ourselves into today. TV had yet to become risque and music had yet to become angry.
The Machivellian ugliness was still there. We just hid it better back then. Hidden in a black and white world of scheming ruthlessness we called big business.
Mad Men is a Golden Globe Award winning TV Series about the lives of men and women who inhabit this cigarette smoke filled world. Press releases say this show about the Madison Avenue advertising business in the 1960s takes “an unflinching look a the ad men who shaped the hopes and dreams of Americans on a daily basis.”
And the soundtrack, “mirrors not only the time and place, but sets an emotional tone for the critically acclaimed series.”
Mad Men not only sets the tone for the series but on its own, this 13 song soundtrack truly captures a time of lipstick covered cigarette butts, martinis and lounge furniture.
The music of Vic Damone, the McGuire Sisters, Bobby Vinton and other 1960 musical icons capture the time like a musem piece. It does a good job in providing a musical sampling of this seemingly innocent and sophisticated bygone era of society. The simple melodies and rhythms of tunes like The McGuire Sister’s bubbly “Volare” and Julie London’s “Fly Me To The Moon” perfectly depict a time when the world seemed less complicated and distracted.
Despite its saccharine quaintness, and cutesy show biz instrumentation Mad Men works like a gin and tonc after a rough day. It’s truly relaxing music that helps ease the tension and is refreshingly joyous in a time when joy seems lacking. Pour yourself a cocktail and enjoy.
