Volunteers rockin’ to raise money for clinic
by Julie Williams
Sunday, June 1, 2008

After a two-mile walk Saturday morning, Angie Lends sat down in her rocking chair.

Only the rocker wasn’t in her living room, it was in Bartlett Park. And she didn’t sit down to relax, but to raise money for the St. Joseph Pregnancy Resource Clinic.

Ms. Lends was one of about 50 volunteers who came to the park Saturday to help raise money for the clinic’s first Walkin’ and Rockin’ For Life fundraiser. Participants spent the weeks leading up to the event collecting pledges or flat donations for their time spent on the road or on their rockers Saturday.

“We just felt that it’s a great organization — the resources out there for young women (to) see that there’s other options — and it’s great for them to be in the community,” said Ms. Lends, who brought her family to the event.

Vicki Cash, a volunteer who helped organize the event, said that even though the number of participants wasn’t high this year, the clinic still got out their name and their message. Plus, they will try the fundraiser again next year.

“We are local right here, and we’re helping our babies here in St. Joe,” she said.

Cynthia Keen, the clinic’s executive director, said about 300 packets were mailed to donors, volunteers, churches and people in the community before Saturday, asking for donations and participants. Ms. Keen had not tallied the total intake from the fundraiser as of Saturday afternoon.

“One of the nice things about a fundraiser like this is it’s almost a picnic atmosphere, and it’s a fun day to come and share for a common cause,” she said.

Money raised will go toward the purchase of education materials and basic needs for expectant mothers, such as cribs, diapers and car seats. Ms. Keen said the clinic is hoping to eventually purchase an ultrasound machine with the help of a grant.

The Pregnancy Resource Clinic offers education programs, mentoring, prenatal care and pregnancy tests free of charge, and also has a mentor program for expectant fathers. The clinic is supported by donations from the community and already has raised more than $13,000 through fundraisers this year.
