A bus fire destroyed an Iowa baseball team’s equipment and personal items early Monday on Interstate 29.
There were no injuries in the incident that involved 25 members of the Clarinda, Iowa, A’s, said manager Ryan Eberly. The breakdown occurred at the 39-mile marker near Faucett, said Capt. Mike Babcock of the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Department.
The team was returning home from a weekend road trip to Kansas when one of the bus’s inside dually tires blew out shortly after midnight and started a fire. A fire extinguisher carried aboard failed to control the blaze, Mr. Eberly said.
“It’s almost like, when you sprayed it on there, it flared up even more,” he added. “It just (went) boom.”
All team members were able to safely exit the burning bus, which was destroyed.
“They were in good spirits,” Mr. Eberly said.
Volunteer firefighters with the South Central Buchanan Fire Protection District responded.
“We called 911 right away when we heard the tire blow,” he said.
An estimated $2,000 to $2,500 worth of personal property — such as laptop computers, I-Pods, car keys, wallets, and luggage — were lost in the fire. All of the team’s equipment, including their uniforms, were a total loss.
“We’ve got to get the kids cleats and ball gloves,” Mr. Eberly lamented.
The players went to the nearby Farris Truck Stop while a Heartland coach bus was secured from St. Joseph to transport them the rest of the way north. They arrived in Clarinda about 5 a.m.
The A’s had just completed a two-for-three swing through Junction City and Topeka.
“We were really on fire, even on the bus,” Mr. Eberly joked.
The team was forced to postpone Monday night’s home game against the Chillicothe Mudcats.
The News-Press was unable to reach South Central fire officials for a report on the fire.
