Civil War battles to take place on riverfront

The public is invited to watch history come alive before their eyes this weekend. More than 200 re-enactors began arriving Friday to prepare for two make-believe Civil War battles. The Union and Confederate battles will take place between the Nature Center and Terrible's Casino by the riverfront.

Local groups, the 7th and 30th Missouri Men and Women Infantry, will be the hosts. Chairman Joe Houts said they are performing the re-enactment as part of the Civil War Sesquicentennial Commemoration. That is the 150th anniversary of Civil War battles that took place right here in the St. Joseph area.

The battles will take place Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30. It is open and free to the public. Houts said they hope to re-enact battles every year through 2015.
