Last fall, Bishop LeBlond’s imposing front line volleyball players spiked the Golden Eagles to a playoff berth.
Two of those hitters — Maggie Adams and Lauren Hicks — will get the chance to continue their careers collegiately. Adams signed a letter of intent with Coffeyville Community College on Thursday, while Hicks intends to play at Division III Simpson College in Iowa.
“Those two girls have been very dedicated to the program for the last four years,” LeBlond coach Kim Huss said. “This is the sport that’s most important to them, and their passion for it allowed them to be able to continue to play.”
Adams joins a Red Ravens program that established a school record for victories last season (33-12) and finished the season ranked No. 16 in the NJCAA Division II rankings.
A former setter, Adams recorded 133 kills, 66 1/2 blocks and served at a 97 percent efficiency rate — including 44 aces.
“Maggie has been adaptable, and that was so important for us,” Huss said. “She just comes through in big situations and makes big plays.”
Adams will play alongside Atchison’s Karesa Barbee, who signed with Coffeyville last year.
Hicks showcased her well-rounded skills by recording 128 kills and 208 digs.
The two college commits are the first in Huss’ three years as LeBlond’s coach and first since Claire Fitzpatrick signed with Benedictine after the 2004 season.
“It says a lot about our talent level and that our program is moving forward,” Huss said.
Proving their Worth
After capping their careers with an 8-man state championship, Worth County’s Andrew Davidson and Austin Hann — both first team all-state players — inked with Graceland University’s football program earlier this month.
Davidson, also the Tigers’ leading scorer on the basketball court, scored 12 touchdowns, 12 two-point conversions and compiled 781 combined yards during Worth County’s playoff run. Hann, meanwhile, spent time clearing room for Davidson and fellow all-stater Kyler Hiatt.
The two join a Hornet team which finished 6-4 last year and features area products Brock Goodman (Lathrop), Daniel Stokes (Trenton) and Justin Murphy (South Nodaway).
High level hoops
Area all stars will get another chance to compete during a pair of upcoming events.
The best of the Big 7 and Delaware Valley League will tip off against each other in the Northeast Kansas All Star Basketball and Volleyball games for the 22nd straight year on March 30 at Highland Community College.
Select Missouri hoops players will get their chance on June 7 in Maryville, when the Lions District 26-F All-Star Basketball Classic will take place. Ron Tyler (Benton) and Kevin Jermain (Jefferson) will coach the boys’ teams, while Katie McCullough (Lafayette) and Terry Hopkins (Savannah) will lead the girls in the event.
