Nuns are still displaced after an Easter morning fire caused 25 women to be evacuated from Our Lady of Rickenbach, the health care facility for the Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration monastery in Clyde.
No injuries resulted from the fire, which was discovered around 8 a.m. It was quickly extinguished by the facility’s sprinkler system, which is heat activated, according to Kelley Baldwin, director of communications for the monastery.
Seven of the building’s trusses burned, but water caused the majority of damage, which was ankle deep by the time the sprinklers were turned off. Firefighters, guests, employees and sisters helped clean up the water, which saved the building from more extensive damage.
“The restoration will be intense, but it won’t be as bad as it could have been,” Ms. Baldwin said.
The water damage was confined to the main corridor of the building. Furniture, computers and the sisters’ belongings were in a different wing and weren’t damaged.
The sisters evacuated from the facility were moved to a wing in the monastery’s main house. The wing is smaller than Our Lady of Rickenbach and is an older part of the building, which has provided challenges.
“We’ll have adjustments to make,” Prioress Pat Nyquist said in a press release. “There are several people to each room. The rest rooms are quite a distance from the bedrooms, and the area is not handicapped accessible.”
The sisters are hoping to install a walk-in bathtub to be used while Our Lady of Rickenbach is being restored.
Repairs to Our Lady of Rickenbach could take several weeks to two months, depending on the amount of damage.
“The main thing is the damage to trusses,” said Ms. Baldwin. “It will depend on if they can be replaced without taking off part of the roof.”
The monastery’s insurance company is investigating the fire, Ms. Baldwin said, but the cause has not been determined.
