Patee House raising funds for roof repairs

Saturday, March 29, 2008

The Patee House Museum needs a new roof and is going to get one.

Jim Buhman, president of the Pony Express Historical Association, helped secure a $10,000 grant from Tourism Cares, a not-for-profit group that supports cultural and historic sites throughout the world.

The 150-year-old Patee House needs about $20,000 to repair the roof, said Gary Chilcote, the museum’s director.

Local businessman Joseph Gray contributed $5,000 to the cause.

Altec Industries, Dr. James Murphy, Ideker Farms and American Family Insurance also contributed, bringing the total amount of funds raised for the roof near the estimated costs.

The museum will host a 150th anniversary dinner April 12 as another fundraiser. Mr. Chilcote will talk about the 150 years of the American West. The cost for the dinner is $25 per person. Tickets must be purchased by April 5.

The association and museum, which isn’t tax supported, are conducting an annual membership drive and welcomes new members.

Recently, death claimed three active members of the historical association: Mavis Weeks, Nancy Davenport and Annie Hoesing.
