Vollmer dominates District 8
by Andy Meyer
Saturday, May 3, 2008

Without looking back, Lindsay Vollmer picked herself up out of the long jump pit, brushed herself off and jogged to her starting blocks for the the 100-meter hurdle finals.

She had another event to dominate.

There was no rest for the victor of four events at Saturday’s Class 2 District 8 track meet at Bishop LeBlond, where the lanky Hamilton freshman swept her events by significant

margins.

“I don’t mind it because you’re always kind of warmed up, always fresh,” Vollmer said of her hectic meet schedule. “It keeps me busy, and I like it better that way.”

Vollmer swept the hurdle events and cruised to wins in the long jump and high jump, and her 40 points helped the Hornets win their second straight district title and third in four years.

Throw in usual suspects Jordan Esry and Lacy Jones — who added 52 points between them — and Hamilton looks like a good bet to keep rolling through next week’s sectional at Cass-Midway and repeat as state champs.

“(Vollmer’s) consistency has sort of been a blessing,” Hamilton coach Jim Dickey said. “It’s nice when you can go to a meet and count on her to get the job done.”

The same goes for Trenton’s De’Andre Vandevender, who practically needed a Blackberry to keep himself on schedule.

The 6-foot-1 senior criss-crossed the field several times between winning leaps in the long, triple and high jumps and switched gears just long enough to help the Bulldogs win the 4x100-meter relay.

He handled his first on-track district experience with ease, knifing through a strong headwind in the second leg to give the Trenton relay the lead for good. Colton McGinness and Scott Stevens cranked out solid splits to close out the event and came up one-tenth of a second shy of the school record but set a

season best.

“I’m kind of used to jumping all over the place,” Vandevender said. “But adding the running in there, it does add a little chaos.”

Both Stevens (100) and McGinness (long jump) — along with lead leg Marshall Foster (200) — qualified individually for sectionals, as well.

Vandevender set a season best in the triple jump at 45-feet-6 1/2 inches and narrowly missed a career best 6-10 in the high jump on his second attempt. Teammate Kyle Hoyt also scored 20 points by winning both throwing events and was another integral part of Trenton’s third consecutive district title.

Other individual standouts included East Buchanan’s Taylor Spiers, who swept the sprint events and broke her own school record in the 200, and a pair of fleet-footed West Platte runners — Zach Layton and Will Fraundorfer.

Layton’s victories in the mile and two mile came as no surprise, but Fraundorfer’s emergence as one of the area’s best sprinters caught even him off guard. The Blue Jay junior notched personal bests in all but the 400, his strongest event at the start of the year.

“I knew I was going to be pretty good in that one, but not necessarily in the 100 and 200,” Fraundorfer said. “Those aren’t even my races.”

They are now. Fraundorfer’s sprint times throw him in the mix as a potential state finalist.

Veronica Modlin, who qualified for sectionals in the 100- and 200-meter dash events, and Shelby Hughes in the mile were the only Bishop LeBlond athletes to advance for the Golden Eagles.

LeBlond’s girls finished ninth in a field of 14 teams with 29 points, while the Golden Eagles’ boys scored 10 1/2 and finished 12th.
