Tuition cap for 9/11 vets sent to gov
by Alyson E. Raletz
Monday, May 5, 2008

The Missouri Legislature today gave the final OK to tuition relief for combat veterans from the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. SB 830, also called the "Missouri Returning Heroes' Education Act," would cap the tuition public Missouri institutions could charge veterans to $50 per credit hour.

As a comparison, tuition at Northwest Missouri State University runs $148.60 per credit hour plus fees for in-state undergraduates.

As the News-Press reported in February, University of Missouri officials have raised concerns over eating the tuition breaks without additional appropriations from the state. Tuition there is more than $235 a credit hour.

The bill needs Gov. Matt Blunt’s signature before it can become law.

It would go into effect this August.

For more information on the bill, go to www.senate.mo.gov

or www.house.mo.gov and search for SB 830.
