City says debris cleanup nears end

Wednesday, May 7, 2008

The city of St. Joseph is wrapping up its final collection of storm debris, and people are asked to call the city at 271-4848 if any remaining debris hasn’t been picked up from the curb. After May 16, debris will be the responsibility of the property owner.

In a news release Wednesday, the city of St. Joseph said it is nearing completion of the debris cleanup effort.

Integrated Pro Services, the contractor hired by the city to clean up and remove the ice storm debris, has completed its work on residential streets. It is working to get the debris removed from the collection site.

Department of Public Works & Transportation street division crews have been collecting the debris located in the right of way that is not eligible for pick-up by the contractor. The city was divided into four sections for final pick-up. Crews have completed three of the four sections. The remaining section to be cleared is that area north of Messanie Street and west of Interstate 29. Crews estimate completion of the debris pick-up will occur by the end of next week.

The city said that street division crews have checked, and re-checked, all other areas for collection. When crews have completed this last section of the city, all ice-storm related debris will have been picked up, according to the news release. The city said it is not anticipated that any debris piles will have been missed. However, if a property has been inadvertently overlooked, residents should contact the Department of Public Works & Transportation at 271-4848.

After May 16, removal of debris from private property and right-of-way will once again become the responsibility of the property owner. The Property Maintenance Department will assume responsibility for working with property owners to ensure remaining debris is appropriately removed. The telephone number for the Property Maintenance Department is 271-5342.

Approximately 1,700 properties have been identified with having dangerous tree limbs hanging from trees in public right of way, as a result of the ice storm. A contractor will soon begin removing these hanging limbs over the public right of way, such as roads and sidewalks, regardless of where the tree is planted.

For more information, contact the office of public information and communications at 271-4610, or the street division at 271-4848.
