Union benefits
A person wanting a union doesn’t mean that that person is looking for an easy job and to get the benefits of hardworking people. If you don’t do your job under a union, you can be fired just like anybody else. But it’s got to be fair. It’s got to go through a hearing by the management and the union to which you belong to see if you are doing your job. Joining a union only means that you get what is fairly coming to you under a contract that is not being done by favoritism or the idea that you might belong to the boss or his family to get better benefits. And things like that can be stopped. It means fairness for all to have a union. You’re right to negotiate your wages, your insurance, your hours, your overtime pay, which otherwise you have no rights to do at all because there’s not a union there.
Wisely organized
This is in regard to the caller in Monday’s paper who was against the deputy sheriff organizing a union. Obviously, this person has never been a member of a union and does not understand why unions were founded. We need more unions to support the blue-collar people of this country. They fight for employee rights that we all deserve and offer reasonable pay and good benefits to support our families. Way to go, sheriff deputies. Get wise and organize.
You knew it
This is about the slum landlords. I’ve only got one small comment. If it was run down when you moved into it, you can’t complain about it. You knew it was going to be a slum landlord when you moved in. The ugly red carpet. The paneling with chips out of it. St. Joseph is full of them, as are a lot of towns. Even though St. Joseph is an All-America City. Ha! Ha!
Watch your trash
I was calling because I had a question: On my way to work this morning, I was behind a truck on Grand. It was an independent trash hauler. Driving down the Parkway, the whole entire way, there was trash flying out left and right. And I was just thinking, “My gosh, here everyone complains about how dirty St. Joseph is and how we need to clean up and we need to do this. Isn’t there some regulations on these trash haulers?” I mean, on my way to St. Louis two weeks ago, there were all these billboards, “Keep Missouri clean,” which I totally agree with. It’s safer for our kids and safer for the animals. Everybody should just keep their trash and don’t litter. It just takes two steps to take that trash to the trash can when you get home.
Unions are a joke. If a person truly wants to work they don't need a union. I made the mistake of joining a union once and I couldn't wait to take a management position so I could get out of it. The only thing that union ever did for me was take my money. If a person works for a good company and does a good job they will be taken care of. I can't stand when I hear someone who is making $30/hr whining about wanting even more money or benefits. When I became a manager the union did nothing but protect whiny, lazy, inept employees. The good emplyees never needed the unions "support". I was involved in a union vote once and I was one of two people who voted no during a strike vote. When asked why I voted no I said "They pay me a good wage and have good benefits, why would I want to strike?" I was told by the union rep that I "just didn't understand how things worked." During that meeting we were also told that we needed to start calling in and taking our sick days or we would lose them during the next contract negotiations. This was all told me by the union rep and our union steward. Perhaps unions were necessary in the early 1900's but they are not needed now. At least not if a person wants to actually work for a living.
Let the name calling begin!

You and I see the unions the same way. I’ll never forget some of the things my Dad said about them.
“If you don’t set your goals and aspirations in life any higher than just getting a union job, or some other form of social welfare, you deserve what you get.” He also said that if you do a good job your employer will take good care of you to keep you.

Talk about an oxy-moron. The unions have their members so brainwashed they can’t think for themselves. They can’t understand that they are the reason so many jobs have left St. Joe.
two years ago, i railed on and on about slum landlords. i still abhor the practice. since then i have been involved in some responsible rental business, and i can say that i have had some of the very worst experiences here with tenants. people who simply don't flush the toilet for the last few days as a little good bye gift, steal the appliances, stick their nasty nose pickings on the walls, take every single light bulb out of the place, break windows, pour bleach and red dye on brand new rugs........ it is not everyone, but there is a cadre of ne'er-do-wells who make it really hard to continue to be optimistic when meeting a new potential tenant here. it takes thousands to bring a carefully renovated apartment rented at reasonable rates back to its formerly pristine condition when a renter behaves like an animal.........
