JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — The Missouri House of Representatives has backed a move to prohibit the governor from accepting gifts from lobbyists.
A bill from Sen. Charlie Shields, R-St. Joseph, applies to any employee of the executive branch. Employees can return gifts, pay for them or donate them to charity if they didn’t realize they’d accepted gifts from lobbyists.
The House gave SB 1288 a positive third reading and passed it 91-54 on Thursday. If Mr. Shields or the Senate disagrees with any changes the House made to the bill, the two sides will negotiate differences in conference. If not, the bill soon will go to the governor’s desk to be signed into law. The bill also changes lobbyist reporting requirements.
For more information on the bill, look up SB 1288 at www.house.mo.gov.
