It's Your Call, May 10, 2008

Following up

I was calling in regard to “Following the funds.” I have noticed that in the past couple of days, there have been questions about where people are fined within the city. And I also would like to know on some of these issues why when somebody has a vicious dog that’s running at large, they get fines of maybe $25 to $50. And then you get a speeder, where maybe they were going five miles over the speed limit, and they get fined $150 or sometimes maybe a little more than that. I would like to know what the deciding factor is on what the fines are. I think that somebody needs to be a little bit more reasonable on who gets charged with what and figure out what the importance of the city is and what the fines should be.

Free mulch?

I was wondering now down at the French Bottoms if any of that mulch is free to the public?

Editor’s note: None of the mulch at the Riverfront is available to the public, due to FEMA regulations for reimbursing the city for the ice storm cleanup costs. However, unlimited self-serve mulch is free at the city landfill.

Running radar

I want to caution some people in St. Joseph who are thinking about running radar guns in their neighborhood. You might check into the federal communications statutes to see whether you are qualified and/or allowed by FCC statutes to run a radar gun. You have to be trained. You have to be qualified. I know there’s speeding going on in this town, but civilians aren’t supposed to be out there shooting radar guns around without the proper licensing. And I can assure you that this has been upheld in court. A couple of cities around this state have had their hat handed to them and all the court cases thrown out for years past for not having the proper FCC licensing. Just another thing that St. Joe needs to do instead of another knee-jerk reaction.

Editor’s note: According to St. Joseph Police Department Sgt. Bill McCammon, volunteers will sign liability waivers and be trained on how to properly use the radar gun. This is a program that has run out of sheriff’s and police departments around the country for at least five years. The St. Joseph Police Department is copying the model.

What about Kuwait

About these oil prices: I thought we went over to Kuwait to run the Iraqis out of there so they can have a better life. They’ve got all kinds of oil. How come we’re not getting any oil? That’s the question. They’re supposed to be our friends. We saved their bacon. Come on, get real.

6 of 8 for McCain

Here at the coffee shop there are eight of us, and we were talking that if Hillary drops out, we’re going to vote for McCain, and that’s a fact. And if six out of eight go for McCain, that’s a pretty good average.

6 of 8 for McCain - Yeah, that's a good average if you're a bunch of white male rednecks.

I think you mean "if you're a bunch of people with common sense."

to 6 or 8:

That's just St. Joe, Obama will win St. Louis and Kansas City and turn Missouri BLUE!

Dondill:
I am a female and proud to say I would never, ever vote for Hillary (that doesn't however mean that I like McCain or Obama either).

Who cares if those people of 6 of 8 are male or female. And since when is it such a horrible thing to be a "red neck"? The majority of this country is made up of those "red necks" you seem to view so poorly. Just because someone chooses to have a conservative view they are a "red neck" and uneducated? That is what your comment implies.

If it weren't for the "red necks" where would we be? The majority of the food you buy at the grocery store and place on your table to feed your family is produced by those very "red necks." Necessary repairs and physical labor you get--such as construction, auto repair, etc.--is done by those "red necks" you so oppose and think so little of. To me "red neck" is not a bad thing, I have a college education and do very well for myself in the business world--I can also rope a steer and pull a calf--I suppose I am just another one of those dumb red-necks myself! (Not to mention very proud of that fact too)

Dondill,
I believe the so-called "redneck" would actually fall into the liberal grouping. I don't know of alot of redneck conservatives. Please think before we speak.

gr8fan:
I cannont think of a single redneck that would want to be called a liberal. Nor do I know any rednecks that want to be considered a liberal; all of them I know are very conservative in their views. Trust me I know quite a few. Maybe you could clarify for me a bit because quite honestly I'm baffled by your comment.
