A good idea, about 10 years too late

I just stumbled across this interesting tidbit on Entertainment Weekly’s Web site: "(FROM VARIETY) — Sony Pictures has acquired the feature-film rights to Goosebumps, R.L. Stine’s hugely popular series of young-adult novels. More than 300 million copies of the books have been sold since 1992 (second only to the Harry Potter tales among novels for youngsters), but a movie adaptation has never come to the big screen. The studio is fast-tracking the project, which it sees as a potential franchise."

If you’re from my generation, chances are you grew up reading Goosebumps, as a pre-cursor to the older (and scarier) Fear Street series. So while I get a warm, fuzzy nostalgic feeling when I read this, I have to wonder, why didn’t they think of this 10 years ago, when R.L. Stine was at the top of his game (and I was young enough to be able to go see the films)?

Still, it’d be interesting to see how the Goosebumps movies turn out (and what tween star they pick for the lead). It’d also be interesting to see if any other book series from my childhood pop up as movie franchises. I’m crossing my fingers for Sweet Valley High.

The really interesting question is, how badly are they going to destroy a treasured memory of my childhood? And which one are they going with first? Will they do them in order they were published? Will they try to combine several different stories/series within the Goosebumps umbrella? Personally, I'd love to see Stay Out of the Basement or maybe The Girl Who Cried Monster, but I have a feeling they're likely to go with Monster Blood or maybe Night of the Living Dummy, as those were some of the more popular titles.

The timing doesn't bother me, though, but that's coming from a 25 year old who still goes to the midnight releases of the Harry Potter movies. It's fun to be a kid sometimes.

P.S. Is there a reason I can't post a comment with html tags? Or does this thing run on BB Code?
