JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Lawmakers left a memorial to a fallen Northwest Missouri trooper off of transportation legislation the Senate considered Thursday night.
The omnibus bill included multiple transportation initiatives, as well as several designations of state highways.
Sen. Brad Lager, R-Savannah, chastised bill sponsor Sen. Bill Stouffer, R-Napton, for not including Trooper Henry Bruns.
The House this spring passed a bill from Rep. Jim Guest, R-King City, that would’ve designated a one-mile stretch of Missouri Highway 169 south of King City limits as the “Mo. Hwy. Patrol Corporal Henry C. Bruns Memorial Highway.”
Mr. Bruns, 41, died during a traffic accident while on duty in 1987.
While similar highway bills were combined into the massive transportation piece, the one involving Mr. Bruns wasn’t.
Mr. Stouffer blamed the exclusion on Mr. Guest, claiming he didn’t cooperate with a state trooper association that handled the highway namings.
Mr. Stouffer declined to elaborate to the News-Press.
Mr. Guest said he authored the bill on behalf of the Missouri State Highway Patrol. He said he believed Mr. Stouffer intentionally ignored the request for Mr. Bruns because of personal disagreements between the two lawmakers.
The Senate didn’t take a vote on the bill by 11 p.m. Thursday.
