The Missouri Legislature has repealed campaign contribution limits in the session’s final hour.
A bill from Sen. Charlie Shields, R-St. Joseph, lifts the caps on Aug. 28, so the change will come into play during the November general election.
His effort received staunch opposition from both parties in the House of Representatives, but SB 1038 still slipped by in a close 83-72 vote.
Opponents argued erasing the limits would cause campaign costs to skyrocket, while proponents aimed to increase contribution transparency.
Since it’s already passed in the Senate, the bill now goes to Gov. Matt Blunt’s desk to be signed into law.
The session ends at 6 p.m. today.
