Baby's first blog
Please come along as I take my first steps in the blogosphere
by Erin Wisdom
Wednesday, November 12, 2008

Welcome to my blog, Words of Wisdom.

Quite a name, huh? Maybe one that sounds pretentious or that promises a level of understanding about life that I, at 24, might be a little limited to deliver. But given that Wisdom is my name, I really couldn’t call it anything else.

Before you read any further, though, I should warn you that despite the name, I might not be very good at this. Blogging, that is.

I’ve been a writer ever since I became capable of putting words on paper – a writer of fiction, poetry, skits, lists, outlines, essays, journals, letters, newspaper and magazine articles, columns and what are perhaps the only Facebook wall posts that consistently contain correct spelling, grammar and punctuation. But I’ve never blogged, and I’m not sure I know how.

I’ve looked at some of the other News-Press blogs to try to pick up some pointers and have realized most of them follow themes that fit the specialties of their respective writers: sports reporters blog about sports, entertainment reporters blog about entertainment, and so on. I, therefore, could blog about health or religion – the beats that I cover – but I don’t particularly want to dedicate my brand-new, first-ever blog solely to one of these.

So this will be a general-interest blog, meaning that I will write about generally anything and hope that you find it interesting. If you were expecting a more specific indication of what you might find here in the future, I apologize. What I will do, however, is try to give you an idea of what I won’t blog about.

I won’t blog about my cat, Luke, who undoubtedly is the best and most beautiful cat in the world. If you met him, you’d agree. But I’m afraid that blogging about him would put me in the same category as the people who dress their pets and carry them in purses, and I’m really not comfortable with that association.

I won’t blog about personal pet peeves related to punctuation, grammar and spelling errors I encounter fairly regularly (although of course never in the News-Press).

I won’t blog about my everyday life simply for the sake of blogging about my everyday life, without any attempt to make an application to the bigger picture or at least to offer you something you might be able to relate to.

In other words, this won’t turn into a what-I-did-today diary, which I know will disappoint the dozens of you who regularly flood my in-box demanding to know about the person behind the Erin Wisdom byline. Your interest is understandable, as many aspects of my life would intrigue you, I’m sure. But even media celebrities like me must maintain some amount of privacy.

So there you have it: my first blog entry. I’m sure I’ll get the hang of this in time, so please keep checking back. Who knows – I might even have a gem of wisdom to impart every once in a while.
