Thursday’s truck and jeep accident on Interstate 29 became a fatality when a 72-year-old Minnesota man became the 41st road death this year in Northwest Missouri.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol said Grant Mulholland, of Rochester, Minn., died at 11:59 p.m. Saturday. Mr. Mulholland’s son, Brad, confirmed his father’s death Monday.
The patrol said Mr. Mulholland’s 2002 Freightliner collided with a Jeep driven by Pamela Wiley on I-29 in Andrew County. The truck went over a bridge rail, crashing on a road before exploding. Ms. Wiley suffered injuries, and Heartland Regional Medical Center staff released her this weekend, said Marcy George, a Heartland spokeswoman.
Ms. Wiley had three stepchildren riding with her. Two were treated and released that night.
The patrol stated that a third child, Trinity Wolf, suffered serious injuries, but neither Heartland nor any other hospital has confirmed that they are treating the 7-year-old.
Federal privacy rules prevent the University of Kansas Medical Center from discussing Mr. Mulholland’s case, said Dennis McCulloch, the hospital’s director of public relations.
Dr. Richard Korentager, the hospital’s burn unit director, did agree to talk about general conditions in the hospital’s burn unit. Individuals who contract severe injuries, burns or are diabetic are candidates for severe infections that can become life-threatening, Dr. Korentager said. There is a high mortality in the best of times, but the burn unit has the best outcomes in the country, Mr. McCulloch said.
Mr. Mulholland’s death was the first in the Highway Patrol’s troop H region this November.
