A new direction

Since Obama won the election, all I’ve heard in the news is that the Republicans don’t have a leader. It’s obvious to me why. The Republican platform has become logically indefensible. Prior Republican leadership proved themselves hypocrites — claiming fiscal responsibility, but being responsible for driving up the national debt by cutting taxes for the wealthy and corporations, then starting expensive wars.

The trickle-down theory is shown false. Giving the extremely wealthy more money does what? No increase in wages, just bonuses for the top earners of the economy. Money tied up at the top is potential labor hours. The working class spending all its money is good for the economy. The wealthy refrain from spending, and that’s bad for the economy.

And if you’re a Republican for religious ideology, you should examine results of religious ideology in government policy. Free exercise but separation of church and state is one of the greatest ideological protections we have in this country. Funded health care, real sexual education and social stability for mothers is what prevents abortions — all Democratic Party solutions. The country has chosen a new direction and it’s progressive, problem-solving and logical. Education proceeds success.

The greatest gifts

My husband and I share such a great love, more than any tangible gifts could express. My siblings and I are secure in our love for one another, so no gifts are exchanged. My best friends and I value our relationships so highly, no presents are expected. They surround me and are fabulous gifts. I enjoy each and every day.

I can pay my taxes and hospital bills and other obligations without feeling guilty about not “gifting.”

During these tough economic times, I would encourage you to be practical and frugal. Spend wisely only on gifts you feel you must give.

Remember the best gift you can give is the gift of acceptance. Accept and appreciate every person in your life because they are of great value to you. While you’re at it, apply that same generosity to yourself.

If you feel you must “spend,” spend time instead of money. Spending time in God’s word is always well-spent.

Wishing you a joyous celebration without all the stress, guilt and depression of gift-giving.

God bless us, everyone!

A new direction/letter/ Nov 26
We are indeed headed on a new direciton but the writer of this letter doesn't have a clue where or why. However I agree with her conclusions that the Republicans really dropped the ball, but cutting taxes was not one of them.

Apparently she didn't notice this week as Obama's highly touted economic advisory team promptly adopted the "trickle down theory", clearly stating that higher taxes simply would not work, in a recession. Indeed the wealthy refrain from "spending"........they invest their money in the tools of the economy thereby creating new jobs and stimulating the economy.

Economic statistics provided by federal agencies and utilized by all economists are irrefutable. Tax cuts lead
to significant increases in revenue in 100% of the cases. And, that explains why John F. Kennedy and Ronald Regan adopted lower tax policies with great success. The same evidence is available from virtually every country in Europe.

Recent deficits did not occur as the result of tax cuts for higher income taxpayers. They were the direct result of uninhibited spending by Congress much of which was accomplished by "earmarks". And, in fairness, it might be acknowledged that Senator Obama missed a lot of sessions and voted "present most of the time, but was clearly a leader in "earmarks".

Of the top six economists of the past 100 years, 5 endorsed "trickle down" economics. Only one, John Kenneth Galbraith, rejected it.....until shortly before his death a couple years ago, when he acknowledged he had "been wrong".

We should all wish President Obama well and his almost instant 180 degree reversal of campaign promises in economic matters bodes well for our future. Lets hope he is equally open to "reality" in other areas.

Well said Julie . . . pay no attention to the negative responses your comments will almost certainly attract . . . education does indeed precede success.

I will be thankful tomorrow that there are a few clear headed people like Julie in St. Joseph that take the time to express their opinions.

Way to go!

Julie also fails to notice that Obama only won by less than 2 points more than Bush in 2004. This is in a year with a huge anti-republican vote and this is all Obama could muster. The real problem will be is that more voted against republicans than voted for Obama. That will be his real handicap.

My, my Julie..... I would say you must be a "teacher" or perhaps a Union person to say what you said. Yes, Republicans vote their conscious. Separation between Church and State - If you remember history...... that was to keep the STATE out of the CHURCH, not the CHURCH out of the STATE.
Shame on you for supporting the democrat platform which is PRO-Abortion, PRO-welfare, & PRO-homosexual!! Do you remember Sodom & Gomorrah?
It's not just about money and the economy. WE've got to turn from "our" wicked ways!! And God will hear from heaven.

238er, what do you think that outcome would have been had race not been an issue? If the Palin-McCain fear/negativity machine was not a viable force?

GrannyKK, I am with you on the abortion issue but...
Pro-welfare is a good thing-it shows you have a heart and are caring about your fellow humans. I will gladly pick you up if you fall-which I hope you do not because if you do you may have to refuse those welfare benefits and go hungry and homeless. Pro-human and pro-homosexual are misused terms. To say that you love someone and respect someone who is homosexual is not the same as saying I love that you are engaged in homosexual activities. Love the person and let God decide who is a sinner, you are not their God. Is it any less sinful for someone to be homosexual as it is for you to judge and hate them? The same for welfare?

Separation of Church and state came at a time when this was necessary to keep the state from abusing the Church and the Church leaders from abusing the state. I am not saying we do not still need this, but at the time it was absolutely necessary.

Regarding New Direction:
It should be noted that so far the Obama economoc program seems to mimic pretty much the Bush program, no tax increases, and continued spending. Also, note working people do not create jobs, wealthy people do. Regarding abortion, it has always been a mystery to me why abortion proponets are nearly always against the death penalty.

tiger I disagree with your statement that working people do not create jobs. Working America earns money to shop (any item or service with a price tag), and shopping is what creates jobs. The wealthy can create jobs but if they are not getting paid by the working/shopping citizens they are going to take away those jobs. If you do not believe this explain why unemployment is so high amidst a huge cutback in consumer spending.

I did not say I hate homosexuals........ God loves them, but hates the sin. Here's a point I would like to make. If I stole something, I would admit it was wrong. The problem with the Homosexuals is that they do not believe it is wrong. It is wrong. They even flaunt it at times.
Welfare..... sweetheart. I work, I have insurance and I also have family that would help me as I have helped them. Welfare is being abused and you know it. It IS there for the hard times, but it was NOT intended to be a lifestyle.

Granny,

Let us for a moment consider the posibility that we are in, or are headed toward, hard times. Let us also consider that you might be laid off from your job, or your family, or... You get the point. Now when you or your family are already struggling, can you take on the responsiblity of your family, even if it means hardship like moving your sister in with you or moving in with your mother or children? What are you willing to do in order to not accept welfare? Would you reject a welfare check if you were down on your luck?

I am a Christian, I assume you are a Christian, but should we assume that homosexuals are Chrisitians? Some are, but I would assume that most are not and do not believe it to be sin because, and get this, they are not Christians. Remember what Jesus told us to do? Seems like a good crowd to minister to and bring them into our group. Perhaps after they are Christians and we have done our part to help them arrive there, we can hold them to a higher standard.

Well said Julie! Granny and her ilk are still holding on to the past, refusing to admit the error of their ways. They'll come around.

Larson-where is the evidence to back up your claims?

Granny-you need to reread the history books, when religion is used to control the masses, like it was originally intended, bad things happen. If you want to believe in a old man who lives way up in the sky with his son, and can see everything that everyone does, so be it. But when you start pushing that hocus pocus on others your no better than any other extreme sect of religion. Faith is a personal matter, not a public one.

They are not creating anything that produces more jobs.

We are now in the throes of a socialist economy with a government transferring our assets and obligating us and our children & granchildren for huge sums in order to pay for a phoney war against out ally in the Reagan/Bush years and the the financial shenanigans of the last 28 years which have benefitted th top 5% of our population leaving the bulk of the population no better off than they were under Jimmy Carter. Note that the prime beneficiaries so far are those 5% individuals. (Socialism for those who have a lot paid for by the masses who do the actual work producing those goods & services we consume.)

If you don't believe this, try to borrow money from the Treasury @ 5 to 8 percent or have the money given to you gratis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Julie is right on! This country has freedom of religous belief. Don't force your extremist christian beliefs on the people of the United States. People like Granny are of the old dying belief that takes the bible literaly. If you do, then that means that you Granny are PRO-incest and polygamy and slavery! Pretty bad stuff compared to a natural homosexual orientation. Democrats are not Pro Abortion, sorry they don't force people to kill babies. I myself would not to force my wife to kill a child, but women should have the opportunity to choose. We don't want to see the coathanger abortion days return do we? Logic and a return to the constitution is exactly what we need! Not chritian extremism!

Ezekiel 16:48-49 "This is the sin of Sodom; she and her suburbs had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not help or encourage the poor and needy. They were arrogant and this was abominable in God's eyes."

Redsox, sounds like you don't read mainstream media...may I suggest Wall Street Journal...USA Today...Barons...and publications from Merrill Lynch, Schwab & JP Morgan...to name a few. The comments I made are now endorsed by Obama appointees Paul Volckner, Lawrence Summers , Timothy Geithner & of course by President elect Obama Appears to be some concensus. Are you suggesting theres any question about the successes of John Kennedy and Ronald Reagan. You can read that reported in the St Joseph News Press.

By the way, the evidence for all of this reported by the named sources, can be found on the internet, in official government data bases....Commerce Department.

A new direction:

This is not a "new direction" it's the new deal part 2.

We have been here before FDR LBJ's "War on Poverity" Carter "comunity reinvestment act"(CRA). Aside from the shining examples of socialsims failurs look to europe and the old eastern bloc. Socialism and Comunism have failed. Even at our weakest our ecnomy is the strongest in the world.

Our econmy was running along just great untill the CRA blew up in our face. Our ecnomy stared to slide and took the world with it. To quote Reagan "Goverment is not the solution it's the problem".

Bailing out Wall Street was dumb, if it happens bailing out "the big three" is dumb. If you don"t have a business that can suvrive on it's own "we the pepole" SHOULD NOT SAVE YOU. Let the failurs fail, let the successful succeed

To another point made in the comments Welfare: It is NOT the goverments job to provide you with an income. You go out and get a job collect a paycheck, buy food shelter and clothing for you and your's. If you are having a hard time with lifes basic needs go to your local church or some other form of "goodwill" "we the people" are giving people when goverment doen't take it from us.

This is the point with the above the less goverment takes from "we the people" the more we put back in. Less taken from the corperations lets them put more back in to expansion to hire more people, to do more research, to find GOOD soultions to the enegry delima some think we have. all these things are JOBS, and i for one have never been given a job by somone that is broke. Now that we have jobs the less taken from the middle class is how to end the welfare state. with the good jobs we have and the goverment taking less from us we have more than we need so what do we do with it? I cant stand to see kids in need of lifes basics, so that is what happens with the money I dont need, it goes to places that effiently help families meet the basic needs of life. you on the other hand might want to rid the world of sickness,or meet a person who has a ides to move forward some tech aspect and back them. You might love the arts and support them locally . My point here is "we the people" can do these things better than a bloted goverment.

Yes, they are creating demand - that's how they help keep the economy running. Their creating demand is a "maintenance" function, not a "job creation" function.

The "job creation" function is filled by people who start a new business and/or invent a new or "improved" product.

Romans 1:25-27 "Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed forever. For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections; for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature; and likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet."
