The Midland Empire Audubon Society’s “Big Sit” will be held Oct. 12 at the Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge observation tower.
Members of the team will arrive at 12:01 a.m. and bird until sunset Sunday evening. MEAS is participating in this worldwide “tailgate party for birders” for the fifth year.
All interested parties and the general public are invited to join in the fun. Individuals, as well as families are welcome to drop in at your convenience, or call to schedule a specific time to ‘sit.’ Bring lawn chairs, insect repellent and snacks. Binoculars and a birding guide book are not required but helpful.
Although one purpose of this event is to monitor bird populations, the secondary reason is bragging rights and a possible $500 prize.
The more observers, the greater the opportunity of seeing and counting more birds.
