Semiannual Fall Clean Sweep begins
by St. Joseph News-Press
Friday, October 3, 2008

Free use of the city of St. Joseph’s landfill began Wednesday and ends Tuesday.

The semiannual Clean Sweep program allows city residents to make multiple trips in a day with the same vehicle, but they can only use the service two days out of the calendar year.

All yard waste, trash and appliances will be accepted at the city landfill from St. Joseph residents. Yard waste must be separated from trash.

The landfill is open from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Residents must have photo identification and a Buchanan County personal property tax receipt from the previous year (look for “SJ” beside the tax amount on a county tax receipt).

There is a limit of six tires per day, and tires must be off the rims. None of the following will be accepted: toxic or hazardous waste, oil, liquid paint and batteries. The landfill is located southeast of the city limits at 9431 S.E. 50th Road.

The intent of Clean Sweep is to assist city residents in maintaining their property and is not a substitute for regular trash collection. The next Clean Sweep is April 1-7. For more information, call the landfill at 253-9764.
