Junior quarterback leads Benedictine to victory
by St. Joseph News-Press

The Kelly-Conor connection helped Benedictine soar to its second win of the season Saturday.

Quarterback Ryan Kelly hooked up with Conor Walsh for the Ravens’ first three scores — going for 22, 76 and 41 yards — on the road against Culver-Stockton, and Benedictine’s offense continued to wake from its slumber in a 45-20 win.

Kelly finished with 274 yards through the air, including four touchdowns, and compiled 100 yards rushing on just 10 attempts. Running back Fred Porter complemented the Ravens’ 1-2 punch in the backfield by rolling up 94 yards on nine carries.

Benedictine (2-3, 2-3 HAAC) started quickly when Walsh capped the team’s opening drive, which lasted only two plays and 23 seconds. Walsh hauled in the first of his three first-half scores from 22 yards out less than five minutes into the game.

Neither team managed to scrape together much momentum until the early stages of the second quarter, when Walsh got going again. He punctuated another pair of quick scoring drives and helped the Ravens go into halftime with a 21-0 lead. Ravens’ kicker Jordan Banion padded the lead with a 34-yard field goal to open the second half.

Culver-Stockton (0-5, 0-4) broke up the shutout midway through the third quarter on a 26-yard interception return by Jordan Cox. But Benedictine made up for the miscue by marching 54 yards in four plays — capped by Kelly’s fourth and final touchdown strike, this one to Jake Mohr.

Both teams exchanged scores for the remainder of the contest, and the Ravens sealed the victory when they received consecutive rushing scores from Jesse Thomas and Gus Kautz.

The Ravens’ defense came up just as big as the offense and limited Culver-Stockton to just 15 yards of rushing on 23 attempts. The Wildcats finished with just 185 yards of total offense — compared to 638 for the visitors.
