Liberty gives Central’s D fits
Kick return puts Jays ahead for good

LIBERTY, Mo. — There wasn’t much Central’s offense did wrong against Liberty. The Indians’ defense, though, couldn’t slow the Blue Jays’ potent offensive attack.

Liberty (5-1) scored nine touchdowns on its way to a 62-34 Suburban Big Seven victory on Friday night in Liberty.

“There were a lot of big plays,” Central coach Tony Dudik said. “The big plays they had hurt us, but I couldn’t fault the effort of our kids. At one point in time, we were ahead. We played with character and heart.”

Central (1-5) held a 10-7 lead after quarterback Sheldon Farrell hit Ghaali Muhammad for a 20-yard touchdown pass with 3 minutes, 36 seconds left in the first quarter.

But Liberty’s Antonieo Bynes returned the ensuing kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown, and the Indians were never able to retake the lead.

“We have a kicker (Austin Barnes) that hits the end zone about 90 percent of the time,” Dudik said. “When we didn’t get it in the end zone, they got us. I have to check the tape to see how many tackles we missed. There’s a reason why the name is special with the special teams. We cannot afford that.”

Liberty wide receiver Marcus Lucas, who finished with seven catches for 162 yards, caught scoring passes of 66 and 34 yards on consecutive drives in the third quarter to give the Blue Jays their biggest lead of 48-19, but Central responded. Muhammad, who had 173 yards on 27 carries, scored on runs of 12 and 68 yards to make it a two-touchdown game with eight minutes left.

But the Blue Jays scored the final two touchdowns of the game.

“We had our opportunities,” Dudik said. “Sometimes, we tried to do a little too much, but I’m proud of the effort. That effort is going to result in some wins down the road. We scored some points against a good Liberty defense.”
