Dems rally for Higdon
Group backs Republican sheriff candidate
by St. Joseph News-Press
Sunday, October 5, 2008

A group of about five Buchanan County Democrats gathered Saturday at Pinzino’s Smokehouse in St. Joseph to rally their support behind Republican Buchanan County Sheriff candidate Galen Higdon.

Mr. Higdon is running for Buchanan County sheriff against Democrat incumbent Mike Strong.

Included in the group was Mickey Gill Jr., the son of former Sheriff Mickey Gill. He said he comes from a Democratic family, but his family members are backing the Republican based on his strong principles.

Other Democrats, including Adam Watson of St. Joseph, said they were throwing their support behind a Republican because they feel he’s better suited for the job.

“It’s really not a party thing,” he said, “He just fits more with my values and with what I want.”

Is this really a news strory? "A group of about five..." Might it have been four? Or six? Mark Sheehan spoke Saturday morning to a group of about 50, and there wasn't a line in the paper about it. But a few guys get together for a sandwich and perhaps a beer and you consider it newsworthy? By the way, I understand the Missouri football team played Saturday night and beat Nebraska at Lincoln for the first time in 30 years. Too bad no one told your sports department.

I think it is newsworthy that Mickey Gill and his family are supporting Galen Higdon. If anyone knows anything about managing a county sheriff's dept it is Mickey Gill, and it is quite the endorsement to get the endorsement of the Sheriff of this county for 20+ years.
