Missouri’s Secretary of State Robin Carnahan will visit St. Joseph Tuesday to help a local Democrat with his statehouse campaign.
Ms. Carnahan will be the keynote speaker at Mark Sheehan’s Soup Kitchen Rally, which is set to start at 11:30 a.m. in the social room of the Buchanan County Democratic Headquarters.
The headquarters is located in the Montee Law Firm, at 520 Francis St.
Mr. Sheehan is challenging Rep. Dr. Rob Schaaf, R-St. Joseph, for the 28th House of Representatives District seat.
Ms. Carnahan, Mr. Sheehan and other speakers — including Rep. Ed Wildberger, D-St. Joseph, and Glenda Kelly, former St. Joseph mayor and state representative — will talk about the economy, Missouri’s increasing unemployment rate and other issues, according to a campaign news release.
“The menu will include hot chili and spicy political rhetoric,” the release stated.
There is no charge for the event, but donations will be accepted.
In another news release, Mr. Sheehan announced Sunday that three statewide education groups had endorsed him.
The Missouri State Teachers Association, the Missouri National Education Association and the Missouri School Administrators political action committee all are backing Mr. Sheehan.
“It’s time our students and schools had a representative on our side in Jefferson City," a St. Joseph School District teacher, John Schlange, stated in the release. Mr. Schlange also is a MSTA member.
UPDATE: Ms. Carnahan will be covering St. Joseph like a blanket Tuesday. Prior to the morning rally, she'll meet with the News-Press Editorial Board at 10:30 a.m. to discuss voter registration. She also is scheduled to plug voter registration among federal service members at 1:30 p.m. at the Missouri National Guard Armory, located at 801 N. Woodbine Road. Buchanan County Clerk Pat Conway and Lt. Col. Paula Dayringer will appear with Ms. Carnahan.
