FAUCETT, Mo. — Emergency personnel located the body of a missing Faucett teen Wednesday in a deep ravine, about a quarter-mile south of Farris Truck Stop and Missouri Route DD and Interstate 29.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol said rescue workers and troopers found Jacob Sandlin, 18, in a ravine near his 1998 Chrysler. Buchanan County Sheriff’s Capt. Howard Judd pronounced the teen dead at 10:35 a.m. Wednesday. The exact time of death couldn’t be determined, as he had been missing since last Friday afternoon. Sheriff’s deputies had been on the lookout for the teen and the Chrysler.
A tow truck driver noticed about 9 a.m. Wednesday the tracks of a vehicle that left 43 Service Road and headed down into a ravine, said Jason McTheeney, a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper. Tracks on the road show that the vehicle was headed north and crossed over the center lane, heading down into the wooded ravine, crashing through trees before coming to a stop, Mr. McTheeney said. The vehicle was perched precariously on a concrete abutment of a large culvert that runs under I-29 and could fall into a deeper gulch, he said.
This is the second fatality for October in the Troop H region, and the 38th fatality this year.
is it me or should something be said about how it took an hour and forty five minutes for a sheriff to arrive at the scene? just my opinion
Posted by azmaggie on October 9, 2008 at 12:36 p.m. (Suggest removal)Maybe it just took that long to find the body as it sounds like it might have been in some rough country and they had to check the truck first to see if he was in it!!!!
Posted by 4wildones on October 9, 2008 at 4:59 p.m. (Suggest removal)I have read the story more than once and have not seen where it says it took 1:45 for the sheriff to show up. I did see where it took some time to pronounce the body. Did you miss the part where it mentioned where the vehicle was sitting? Did those few minutes make any difference to the outcome?

Posted by MichaelH on October 9, 2008 at 8:56 p.m. (Suggest removal)thats an hour an thirty five minutes..but there are alot of things that probably happened in between that time..this story is to vague to say it took the sheriff dept. that long...but..i wouldnt doubt it if it did..
In any case, only a medical doctor can determine a death. Not a police captain.
Maybe Judd plans to run for coroner?
It is certainly too bad for Mr. Sandlin, though. My heart goes out to his family.
Posted by ninja_man on October 9, 2008 at 9:39 p.m. (Suggest removal)if indeed it took the sheriff that long to arrive on the scene (BTW, where did you get that info?) this person had been missing since last friday, and i'm sure the first person on the scene could tell if they were dead or not.

Actually a RN (two to be exact) or a physician can pronounce death, but pretty sure Judd is neither.
Posted by luvbug on October 9, 2008 at 10:58 p.m. (Suggest removal)I don't think we should worry about the fact how long it took them to pronounce Jake dead. I think we should focus on how long it took for someone to discover him and his car. That service road is sometime pretty busy and close to the interstate it blows my mind on how long it took for someone to notice something. I knew Jake and I know his family. I'm deeply upset by the loss of him.Not too many years ago the Sandlin family lost their oldest son. I just don't understand how such horrible things could happen to such a good family. May God bless and strengthen all of you.
Posted by joeblow on October 10, 2008 at 10:33 a.m. (Suggest removal)sorry that i miss read the 10:35, the whole point is that DD hwy way is pretty busy, and the sheriffs could careless about what happens out in faucett or agency, trust me i know, i also know that a missing person report was made and that the story in the paper does not match the first responders story. The sheriffs don't do there job, they want to drive up and down king hill or stockyard express way or sit on the side of I 29 giving speeding tickets when its the state troopers job!

Posted by luvbug on October 10, 2008 at 11:21 p.m. (Suggest removal)You are sooooo right joeblow. DD hwy is pretty busy and so is that service road. I grew up in Faucett so like you said I also know how things go around there.
Posted by Toughtimesfade on October 11, 2008 at 9:18 a.m. (Suggest removal)Oh, come on!! First off not only RN and physicians or coroners can pronounce death. Emergency Medical service (paramedics and EMT-basics) can do the same if it is obvious. But you are all looking at this wrong. What you should be looking at is the fact that another young life has been lost. And I don't know but I am going to bet that this poor young man was not wearing his seatbelt. After 27 years in the EMS business I have seen it all too often. Those of all ages dying because they have not worn their belts. The head line of this story says found near the car. That pretty much sums it up--no seat belt. Let's think about the life of this young man and the sorrow his family and friends are going through. Not how long it took for a deputy to get there or pronounce. I pray for peace to come to the family and friends.
