A Central High School teacher has resigned following allegations of what school officials called an “inappropriate relationship” with a male student.
Nicole Weis, 25, a physical education teacher for the last two years at Central, resigned Friday following a meeting with St. Joseph School District administrators regarding the allegations. She “admitted no wrongdoing” but resigned following the meeting, said Doug Flowers, director of human resources for the school district.
The alleged inappropriate relationship occurred last spring with an 18-year-old who was a student at the time, Mr. Flowers said.
A message left by the News-Press at a number listed on the district’s teacher registry as Ms. Weis’ was not returned as of late Wednesday.
The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has been alerted to the matter, said Jim Morris, spokesman for the department.
“Law provides that the employer may request disciplinary action, which may include revocation,” Mr. Morris said of an employee’s teaching certificate. “It will probably take several months from the time we get an official complaint from the school board, assuming we do.”
Mr. Morris, who has been with the department for 33 years, said those kinds of complaints involving inappropriate relationships between students and teachers are “fairly rare.”
Mr. Flowers said the school district “take(s) our job seriously in hiring quality people” and that it does the appropriate background checks that are required by law.
“We do take it serious, and I’m not sure there is anything we can do in advance (aside from the background checks) that would keep this from happening with an individual,” he said.
