Forbes recently came out with its list of best and worst cities for singles, ranking the top 40 major metropolitan areas based on seven categories — the number of singles. coolness, nightlife, culture, job growth, cost of living alone and ease of online dating.
Not being a major metropolitan area, St. Joe obviously didn’t make the list. But our neighbor down south, Kansas City, did. Out of the top 40 major metropolitan areas, Kansas City ranked 36th, beating out only Indianapolis, Cleveland, Salt Lake City and Jacksonville. In the seven categories the cities were judged on, KC ranked in top 10 in only online dating and cost of living alone. It was ranked in the bottom 10 in the other seven categories.
Seeing as how I’ve had minimal luck with the St. Joe dating scene, finding out that the place where I spend about half my weekends is one of the worst places to be single is... disappointing to say the least. Grim and disheartening even.
I do have to question some of the other cities that were ahead of Kansas City. Places like Detroit, which ranked ahead of Kansas City in number of singles and coolness and was 20 or more spots ahead of us in both culture and nightlife.
Seriously? I’m sorry, but when I think of Detroit, all I think of is crime and unemployment, not culture and nightlife.
Perhaps the data for this was taken before the Power and Light District was fully up and running, which could explain why nightlife was such a low ranking. If you’ve ever been there on the weekend, you know it’s always swarming with single people — especially McFadden’s, aka The Meat Market.
And as far as coolness — which was determined in a national poll by asking people which cities they think are cool — I think Kansas City is one of those places that you don’t realize how cool it is until you live there.
Maybe it’s denial, but I just won’t accept that Kansas City, i.e. my second home, is one of the worst place for singles. Because if that’s true, then I might have to start considering some better ways to meet guys. Or renew my Match.com subscription.
