Tony Bogart is a people person.
The Weston, Mo., man worked in rent-to-own businesses for about 30 years before opening his own store, Tony Rents, in Downtown St. Joseph.
“I can’t believe how good it’s going,” Mr. Bogart said. Only a month after opening, he said he already has around 75 customers.
Mr. Bogart said that he carries several major brands, including Whirlpool and Ashley Furniture. The showroom floor, located at 528 Edmond St., has bunk beds, sectional sofas, refrigerators, bedroom sets and accessories.
Customers pick out the furniture, appliances or electronics they’d like and fill out an order form.
Once Mr. Bogart checks their information, including references and employment, customers get their items delivered free and they start making their payments.
While all of Tony Rents’ inventory can be purchased for the retail price up front, most customers choose to do monthly payments. Mr. Bogart said that smaller items, like a DVD player, would only have payments for three months, while larger items could go from 12 to 18 months.
“I try to be flexible,” he said. “I always had good relationships with people. And people seem to like me.”
Mr. Bogart runs the store with his daughter.
The store is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. For more information, call 364-9100.
