Everyone wants to help out a good cause. It’s even better when helping out involves playing a round of putt-putt. The Miller Lite Open four-person putt-putt pubcrawl will tee off this Saturday, with all proceeds benefitting United Cerebral Palsy of St. Joseph.

Kyle Clizer, on premise manager of Miller Lite and one of the organizers, says a similar event has been taking place in Kansas City for 10 years. He thought it’d be a good thing to bring to St. Joe.

“It’s a fun, interactive way to donate your time and your money to charity,” he says.

The pubcrawl will be from noon to 7 p.m. Teams can sign up the day of the event at any of the nine bars participating: Norty’s, Kelly’s, Hi-Ho, First Ward House, The Brown Bear, Las Palmas, Wiley’s, Legend’s and Uncle D’s. The cost is $40 per team, which will be collected at registration.

Players must be 21 years of age and provide their own putter. They are also encouraged to dress in golf attire, as a prize will be given to the best-dressed team.

Teams will start and end at their “home bar,” the place where they registered, and follow the course to the eight other bars in between. Each bar is building its own miniature golf hole.

“It’s truly a 10-hole course,” says Chris Kelly of Kelly’s Pub. “You shoot your home bar twice.”

Score cards must be turned in no later than 7 p.m. Scores will be tallied, and the team with the overall lowest score will win. Each bar will have an overall winner.

The pubcrawl is a chance for people to “go around, drink some beer, play a little putt-putt and have a good time, all for a good cause,” Clizer says.

Clizer encourages every team to have a designated driver available. If they can’t, CMN cab company will be providing cheap fares to and from the bars.

Though this is the first putt-putt pubcrawl in St. Joe, organizers are already looking ahead.

“The way we’re talking, if this one goes well, we’re going to do another one in February,” Kelly says.
