Two Savannah men charged with assault could face new charges following the victim’s death.
Buchanan County prosecutors charged Dallas Cox with second-degree assault last Thursday in connection with an altercation that occurred on Oct. 6. Kenneth Akin was arrested Sunday for his alleged participation in the same assault and also faces charges of second-degree assault.
The two were alleged to have attacked Mr. Akin’s nephew Stephen Akin, 26, at 3405 S. 40th St. on Oct. 6, said Capt. Kevin Castle, a spokesman for the St. Joseph Police Department.
Mr. Akin died Monday at Heartland Regional Medical Center from complications related to a head injury that allegedly was the result of last Monday’s attack, Mr. Castle said. Police did not elaborate on the assault or whether a weapon was used.
An autopsy will be performed by the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s office today.
The assault is now considered to be part of an ongoing homicide investigation, Mr. Castle said Monday.
Both defendants remain in the Buchanan County Jail without bond. No court information was available Monday as the Buchanan County Courthouse was closed for Columbus Day.
