Noontime concerts begin Thursday

For the past decade, the First Presbyterian Church’s Downtown Noon Concert Series has given residents a chance to get a healthy serving of culture on their lunch hour.

The 2008-09 concert series will once again give St. Joseph residents that musical option starting Thursday.

The concerts, presented by First Presbyterian Church in cooperation with the Missouri Western State University Department of Music, will take place on the first Thursday of every month from September through December and February through April. All concerts will start at 12:10 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 301 N. Seventh St., and will require a minimum $3 donation. You can bring a sack lunch and beverages will be provided.

Jerry L. Anderson, coordinator of the Downtown Noon Concerts and director of music at First Presbyterian Church, says the concert series has built a respectable following in the past 10 years.

“It’s a loyal group and it’s amazing ... We have a wide variety of people come in,” Mr. Anderson said.

All of the performers in the concert series are returning performers, including guitarist Jason Riley, who will kick off the series playing a mix of classical, jazz, original songs and twists on some familiar favorites. Mr. Riley appreciates the setting and the emphasis on early performances to attract a different crowd.

“It’s a beautiful church and the acoustics are really great for this type of performance,” Mr. Riley said. “Hopefully, some people could come out who wouldn’t come out otherwise.”

Other performances will include jazz pianist Jeremy Gregoire and friends on Oct. 2; the Missouri Western Concert Chorale under the direction of Frank Thomas on Nov. 6; “Sounds of the Season” featuring Jerry L. Anderson on organ and piano on Dec. 4; pianist Vicki Bragin on Feb. 5; Missouri Western Symphonic Winds with director Jeff Hinton on March 5; and “Sounds of the Season” featuring the First Presbyterian Church Sanctuary and Bell Choirs with directors Jerry Anderson and Judy Long on April 2.

For additional information, contact the church office at 232-3358, the Missouri Western music office at 271-4420 or Jerry L. Anderson at 262-0800.
