Caffeine buzz: Rider makes most of coffee fixation
by Rick Dunaway
Sunday, September 7, 2008

Tom Danielson likes coffee. A lot.

When he’s not spending time in the saddle during seemingly endless training sessions, Danielson keeps busy with his own line of coffee.

“I love coffee, No. 1,” Danielson said. “That just came from me buying coffee from one local coffee guy in Durango (Colo.) that was a big cycling fan. One day we just sat down and made the decision to have some fun with it, make different labels and create a sister business with his existing business.”

The coffee blends — Brasstown Bald, Madone, Mt. Evans, Mt. Washington, Mt. Ventoux and Iron Horse — represent many of the famous bicycle racing climbs of the various tours. On many of them, he holds the records.

Danielson insists the coffee line is mainly for fun, rather than for profit. But as a business major he is keenly aware of the need for a fallback career.

“You can only beat the crap out of your body for so long in cycling,” Danielson said, “so it’s really important to make another business for yourself besides your cycling career.”

For Danielson, his passion — besides potent coffee — is developing young riders. That’s why he’s created a junior race series in Colorado.

“That’s really my startup business,” he said.
