Bryston Williams finally looked comfortable as a quarterback, and Savannah coach Mark Cole could see the difference. Lafayette's first-year quarterback was nearly flawless against Cole's Savages.
Williams completed 13 of 17 passes for 149 yards, nearly doubling his total from the first three games. At one point, Williams completed 10 straight passes, and the only blemish came on a forced throw, when Brett Smith made a diving interception near Savannah's sideline.
"I felt like tonight he looked very comfortable in the pocket, like he was finally comfortable with what he was doing back there," Cole said. "Previous weeks, he looked like a kid that had just been moved to quarterback. He's got three games under his belt. Tonight, he looked like a quarterback who was comfortable in his offense."
The quarterback play was outstanding from both sides -- the best Cole has seen in his 11 years of coaching. Williams and Savannah's Travis Partridge combined for an eye-popping 610 yards of total offense.
I couldn't believe that figure as I tallied it up Friday night. That type of performance wouldn't have seemed possible in recent weeks as Williams struggled to find a rhythm after switching from wide receiver to quarterback. But his pure athletic ability kept him in his role and his blazing speed has caught the attention of Kansas State, according Lafayette coach Paul Woolard.
But Williams was just 14 of 41 after three weeks, a subject we have broached repeatedly in capsules and stories.
After one second-half completion on a touch pass from Williams, Lafayette coach Paul Woolard looked back at me and said, "Maybe you should keep writing about how he can't throw a football." Duly noted.
