Kimberly Dejonge meets with one of the men who helped save her life, flight nurse Mike Mazur, for the first time at a benefit for Ms. Dejonge Saturday near Faucett.
FAUCETT, Mo. —The 19-year-old’s beaming green eyes and giant smile almost hide the scar that stands as a reminder of a night that could have ended her life.
Kimberly Dejonge was living what seemed a normal life. Residing in Atchison, Kan., and working as a convenience store clerk, she never thought she would fall victim to a criminal.
The night of June 19, she was working at the Stop-N-Go in Winthrop, Mo., when a man entered the store, slit her throat and stabbed her multiple times. The man robbed the store then took off, leaving Ms. Dejonge to die.
Seeing Ms. Dejonge Saturday, one never would have guessed the horror she had suffered were it not for her scars.
Surrounded by family, friends and some unfamiliar faces, Ms. Dejonge shined. Everyone gathered in her honor in hopes of raising enough money to cover mounting medical bills.
Friends of the family George and Laurie Duncan, along with Jim Corkins, hosted a benefit for Ms. Dejonge on a farm just outside of Faucett, Mo., Saturday afternoon.
“Kimmy has always had the greatest personality ever,” Ms. Duncan said, fighting off tears. “Words can’t describe this child.”
For Ms. Dejonge’s older brother, Jason Dejonge, the night was unbelievable.
“My first thought was, ‘She’s dead.’” Mr. Dejonge said.
Mr. Dejonge remembers the doctors discussing the possibility of brain damage while Ms. Dejonge was in surgery. Now he likes to think that he helped play a part in what kept her alive.
“Me, our brother and our grandpa raised her to be tough,” Mr. Dejonge said. “I just hope she doesn’t take it for granted that she’s still alive. It was an eye-opener for everyone.”
Ms. Dejonge remembers that night from a different perspective.
“My first thought was, ‘I’m going to die like this,’” Ms. Dejonge recalls. “The second thought was, ‘I have too much to live for, I’m going to fight to the end,’ and that’s what I did. I just fought as hard as I could.”
Ms. Dejonge has a few more doctor visits in her future but looks to be cleared from physical therapy soon. She also plans to attend Heritage College in Kansas City.
Ms. Dejonge said she doesn’t harbor any hard feelings.
“Every day is a good day to wake up,” Ms. Dejonge said.
Sean E. Cave, 38, of Atchison, Kan., has been charged with first-degree assault, first-degree robbery and armed criminal action. He remains in the Buchanan County Jail.

I am so glad she is ok! I do not know Kim, but I know her brother and mother, she comes from a great family, and am glad she stayed strong and pulled through so a horrible attack.
Thanks for the update on Kim. So many times you read something like this and never hear any more from the victim. Its good to know she is getting on with her life!!
Such a beautiful, and tough, young lady. So happy that you are are recovering so nicely.
Question about the man charged, why on earth is he not charged with attempted murder? Or is he?
We could all learn something from this brave and beautiful person. She experience something that no person should go through. The guy who did this is not a Human Being. I believe he is a animal with no hope of rehabilitation. Put him in a cage and dispose of key. Its hard to believe that a person could do something like this in our community. It is proof that there is worthless scum out there. Be careful......
Why does she have medical bills?? This would be a work comp claim!!! She was injured on the job!!!
Well I would presume though there is loss of income that isn't covered, probably since workman's comp/disability doesn't cover full wage lost during this time. However, one would think that her employer's insurance should cover the medical costs. I really don't know how it works in a case like this with her being viciously attacked. Sometimes workman's comp won't approve things that it should. Depending on where she has to travel too for medical visits, and without a job...I can see there being costs. Agree though, the business should be covering things. I am sure there is more costs involved than we are aware of. I just think too, that she probably has things mounting if she hasn't been able to work since the accident. I know a few people who have been off on workman's comp and they have to go with reduced or little wage to live off of. Maybe the paper was erroneous in stating it was for only medical bills? Or is this not a workman's comp? I don't know which is the case, but what I do feel is this young lady is lucky to be alive, and if she has trouble with bills, medical or otherwise mounting especially a member of our community (surrounding area) then it would be neighborly to help out if one can. I don't doubt there are mounting costs. I am so happy that she is coming along nicely and I wish her the best. It is so great to see her smiling after what she has been through. That speaks volumes and it lifted my spirits seeing the update on her. Many of us take things for granted and what happened to her can happen to anyone...and maybe without the better ending.
Although most employers are required by law to carry workman's comp, that doesn't always occur due to cost, economy, etc. When this happens, the employer is fined but then the person who was injured is on their own as far as medical expenses, etc. I'm not saying that's what happened here but it's possible. It's sad that it's just not safe to work at convenience stores because so many times, they're the ones that are targeted for crimes that occur.
To Ms. Dejonge, bad things happen to good people and I'm glad you didn't let this horrible crime change your outlook on life and living. You are truly amazing and a great example to people to overcome obstacles no matter how tragic and live! May God bless you!
My Aunt was stabbed 32 times at a 7Eleven in Colorado about 3 years back. She dies on the scene. Guess what was stolen??? No money, 1 carton of Marlboro lights. THATS IT!!! A life for a carton of cigarettes.
I am very happy to hear this young lady survived her attack. That man deserves to burn in hell for the rest of eternity. The man in my Aunt's case was sentenced to life w/o parole.
Her bills were paid through workman's comp. Also her children (my cousins) recieved several settlements. In Ms. Dejonge's case her med bills should be covered. I am sure heer attorney has given her all she needs to know on this but I don't see why she is forking out the bill for this. She was newarly murdered. Where's the compassion. A person that has gone through something like this, UNVOLUNTARILY to say the least, should never have to pay for it past the physical damage.
I hope she can get enough money together to pay her bills.
The state also has a f und set up to pay w/c for uninsured workers then the employer must pay it back as part of the fine for not having insurance. This is why I do not see why she has medical bills. As far as her wages they are paid at 66% which is not taxable.
I am glad to hear she is doing good but I still question why she has medical bills.
I have heard that her employers didn't have workman's comp, and also aren't paying the bills. They have used the money from the benefit to pay for her insurance which will then take care of the bills. It's very complicated.
I believe that the foreign owner of the store has fled the country as he did not pay any insurance that would provide for his employees in a case such as this. If anyone knows more or knows different, please correct me if I'm wrong. PLEASE EVERYONE, LET'S SUPPORT THIS YOUNG WOMANS RECOVERY. I DO NOT KNOW HER PERSONALLY, BUT WILL BE SENDING HER SOME MONEY. DO WHAT YOU CAN. peace hope and joy
