The top four teams this week’s poll meet this week. No. 9 Northwest and No. 5 Nebraska-Omaha bring the conference’s top two offenses into their matchup in Nebraska, while No. 20 Central Missouri can stakes an early claim to biggest threat to the Mavericks’ supremacy with a win at No. 7 Pittsburg State.
Rank-LW-School-Record
1. (1) Nebraska-Omaha (3-0, 2-0 MIAA) — This quote from Southern coach Bart Tatum in Sunday’s Joplin Globe pretty much sums up the Mavericks’ offense: “I didn’t have any illusions about shutting UNO down, but the last three quarters or so, they pretty much did what they wanted to do on offense.”
2. (3) Central Missouri (4-0, 2-0) — The Mules have only won once in ‘The Pitt’ since 1959 — a 23-20 victory in 2002, which also happens to be the last season they went to the playoffs
3. (2) Pittsburg State (4-0, 2-0) — I think the Gorillas’ run of winning close games ends this weekend against Central Missouri, but it won’t be because of Caleb Farabi, who just dynamic last Saturday
4. (4) Northwest Missouri (3-1, 2-0) — The Bearcats defense looked great last week at Truman, but I don’t think the good vibes will last through Saturday
5. (6) Washburn (2-2, 0-2) — The Ichabods’ conference title aspirations
6. (10) Emporia State (3-1, 1-1) — Regardless of how the three-game road stretch goes after this week, a win Saturday over Southern would indicate coach Garin Higgins has his Hornets on the rebound
7. (5) Fort Hays State (2-2, 1-1) — Mark it down: Sept. 19, 2009, at Truman is when the Tigers will win their first MIAA road game
8. (7) Missouri Southern (2-2, 0-2) — Adam Hinspeter looked pretty ordinary against UNO, going 17-of-38 for 135 yards, a touchdown and an interception
9. (8) Missouri Western (1-3, 0-2) — Blown calls and porous defenses aside, Drew Newhart has to protect the football and scramble for yardage every now and then for Western to come out on top of these close games
10. (9) Truman State (1-2, 0-2) — Since 1995, the ole Hickory Stick hasn’t resided in Kirksville only once — in 2001 — and I don’t see its home changing anytime soon
