Pick ’em blog: Week 4 review, Week 5 picks
by Andy Meyer
Thursday, September 25, 2008

In this line of work, mulling over impossibly hypothetical matchups can be half the fun.

For example: Who wins the former Midland Empire Conference clash between Platte County’s first state championship team in 2000 and the 2005 Cameron squad that rewrote the record book on offense? A do-it-all offense versus the spread. Drew Newhart vs. Brandon Gutshall at quarterback.

Epic.

Are such exercises a waste of time? Definitely. But as discussion topics go, it’s still plenty enjoyable banter for those who saw the Pirates and Dragons teams dominate their respective classes.

Now, it appears, the 8-man world has a similar debate: this year’s Mound City squad against Worth County’s 2007 team.

Last season’s semifinal game between the conference rivals lacked nothing in terms of all-around talent, big plays and building drama. But the better team prevailed in the end on a Kyler Hiatt touchdown run in the game’s waning seconds.

After a stunning 58-0 pounding of a pretty good Stanberry team, I think we’re still getting an idea of just how good this year’s Panthers are. Are they on par with last year’s Tigers? We’ll leave that up for you to throw around.

As for our picks this week:

Mound City (4-0) at Worth County (4-0) — Andy: Mound City; Ross: Mound City.

Blue Springs (4-0) at Raymore-Peculiar (4-0) — Andy: Blue Springs; Ross: Blue Springs.

Lee’s Summit West (3-1) at Raytown South (4-0) — Andy: Lee’s Summit West; Ross: Lee’s Summit West.

Pleasant Hill (4-0) at Harrisonville (3-1) — Andy: Harrisonville; Ross: Harrisonville.

Orrick (4-0) at Windsor/Green Ridge (3-1) — Andy: Orrick; Ross: Orrick.

Carrollton (4-0) at Wellington-Napolean (3-1) — Andy: Carrollton; Ross: Carrollton.

Hamilton (4-0) at South Harrison (3-1) — Andy: Hamilton; Ross: Hamilton.

Jefferson City (3-1) at Rockhurst (3-1) — Andy: Rockhurst; Ross: Rockhurst.

Oak Grove (4-0) at Excelsior Springs (2-2) — Andy: Oak Grove; Ross: Excelsior Springs.

Rich Hill (4-0) at Adrian (3-1) — Andy: Rich Hill; Ross: Adrian.

Thanks, as always, go out to Mosports.com maven Shamp for selecting the weekly matchups.

Year-to-date standings (after Week 4)

Ross 28-12, Andy 23-17

Just curious as to why there was only one local game picked. I always love to read "pick selection" articles, but not on high school games in the KC Metro that no one really has a lot of knowledge of. There are enough local games that you could pick from.
