From as far away as Maine and Texas, members of the Association of the Second Battalion (Mechanized), 22nd Infantry Regiment Vietnam Veterans came Wednesday to St. Joseph to honor a fellow military man.
“For valor and devotion to his brothers in arms and with gratitude for his unselfish and tireless efforts in supporting his brothers, Ival Lawhon is awarded the designation of ‘Distinguished Member of the Triple Deuce’ and has our respect and love,” said Dick Nash, president of the organization who drove in from Eliza, Ill., to make the presentation.
Mr. Lawhon told those assembled on Wednesday evening at Galvins that he’s always been happy to do anything for the Triple Deuce, but a month ago he wouldn’t believe he’d feel good enough to attend an event like this. Mr. Lawhon recently retired from the News-Press as a photographer because of illness.
Mr. Lawhon served with distinction in the unit in Vietnam. Two of the medals he earned at that time were the Bronze Star and Purple Heart medals.
