Benedictine wilts again in second half

ATCHISON, Kan. — The second half doomed Benedictine again on Saturday, as the Ravens’ squandered a narrow lead at intermission and ultimately fell to Baker 35-24 in Atchison.

Baker quarterback Mack Brown proved to be the difference-maker. He completed 28 of 39 passes for 365 yards and threw three touchdown passes.

Brown also ignited Baker in the third quarter with a well-executed bootleg for the go-ahead touchdown 7:58 left in the period.

“We didn’t match up with some of their athleticism, like on the bootleg,” Benedictine coach Larry Wilcox said, referring to the 13-yard scoring run by Brown. “They’ve got a great quarterback in Brown, and he was able to pick up his receivers, make the plays, get the first downs and eventually get them on the board.”

The Ravens were able to slow Baker’s offense at times with a strong pass rush. Benedictine had five sacks, including two by Chris Kline.

“But you can’t always do that,” Wilcox said. “You’ve got to cover, too.”

Brad Fawcett did the most damage to the Ravens’ secondary. He raced for 111 receiving yards on three catches. He also caught two touchdowns.

Benedictine quarterback Ryan Kelly completed 14 of 25 passes for 194 yards. He threw two touchdown passes, but he also was picked off twice.

Kelly’s leading receiver was Conor Walsh, who had five catches for 94 yards and a touchdown.

“We made some big plays,” Wilcox said. “Conor Walsh continues to be a great go-to guy for us.”

The Ravens also ground out 153 yards rushing on 38 attempts. They were led by Fred Porter’s 78 yards on eight carries.

“We had moments today where we moved the ball better and were a little more effective,” Wilcox said. “I was glad to see that we ran the ball better than we have in previous games.”

The Ravens fell to 0-3 on the season.

“There’s still seven games to play, so there’s a lot of football to go,” Wilcox said. “We can start second-guessing and questioning, and that’ll tell us something, or we can pull together and play hard as a group.”
