OREGON, Mo. — Two teenage girls from Minden, Iowa, were hospitalized Saturday following a one-vehicle accident on Interstate 29 at the intersection with U.S. Highway 59.
Sarah Burns, 17, and Lian Raitt, 16, remained in the emergency room Saturday afternoon receiving treatment, a Heartland Regional Medical Center nursing supervisor said.
The Highway Patrol stated both girls received moderate injuries.
According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report, the accident occurred at 7:30 a.m. Saturday as Miss Burns drove north on the interstate in a 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier. The car went into the median, continuing to travel north between the two bridges at the Highway 59 intersection. The car became airborne, striking a concrete embankment on the south side. Momentum carried the vehicle across Highway 59, where it proceeded to strike the north side concrete embankment before stopping.
A trooper cited Miss Burns for failure to drive on the right half of the road. Miss Raitt received a citation for failure to use a seat belt. The Chevy was totaled and towed to Mound City, Mo.
Gee, did they remain in the Heartland emergency room for the usual 5 to 6 hours before being seen by any medical personnel?
