Northwest Missouri State University officials have narrowed the list to four in their search for the university’s next president. Two names should ring familiar.
Dr. John Jasinski, a former teacher at Northwest, and Dr. Kent Porterfield, a former student and cabinet member at the school, are on the list with Dr. Robert Clark, vice chancellor at the University of Kansas, and Dr. Joseph Shepard, a vice president at Florida Gulf Coast University.
Dr. Clark, who has served at KU since 2000, was educated at Arizona State University and Colorado State University before earning a doctorate in education administration at Syracuse University in 1988. He also attended the Institute for Education Management at Harvard University in 1993.
Dr. Jasinski earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Central Michigan University in the mid-1980s. He came to Northwest as a teacher in the mass communications department in 1986 and held various positions there, including assistant provost, until 2001. He received his doctorate in education leadership and higher education administration from the University of Nebraska in 1996. Since 2001, Dr. Jasinski has operated Jasinski Consulting Services in Maryville.
Dr. Porterfield received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Northwest in 1989 and 1992. From 1990 to 2006, Dr. Porterfield served as the director of the student union, assistant dean of students, and left Northwest after nine years as the vice president for student affairs. He’s currently the vice president of student development at St. Louis University.
Dr. Joseph Shepard, vice president for administrative services and finance at Florida Gulf Coast University, has served in that position since 2003. He received his bachelor’s degree in math education from Northern Arizona University and his masters in business administration from the University of North Texas, where he held various positions, including assistant director of housing from 1990 to 1995. He earned his doctorate in public administration from Florida International University.
Dr. Shepard began his career as a journalist in 1984 before switching to academics in 1990.
The four candidates will make two-day campus interviews/tours beginning April 13 through 28. The presidential search committee has said it will make a decision in late April or early May.

This is a wierd group. The guy from KU is in Charge of the Edwards campus. The Edwards campus sole mission is to educate non-traditional students. So no campus life, no athletics, no food service...
The person from Florida is an accountant with no true acadamic background, so NW faculty how do you feel about that one? Also wasn't FGCU just involved in a lot of controversy lately - sex scandals and harrassments?
Then you have the two Bearcats. Neither qualified but one will get the job. One out of education for 8 years that when he was at NW his highest title was Assistant Provost. The other a student development guy with no academic background...but at least they are both bearcats, which in the arrogant world of Northwest and Maryville is enough. It will be one of these two.
They would be running a university not teaching. Educators seem to confuse the two.
I have a feeling that "Realist" is one of those people that is trying to undermine the Board of Regents and wouldn't be happy with anybody that they chose.
Nobody has to try and undermine the board of regents- they do an outstanding job of making themselves look like fools.
This is ridiculous, out of an entire pool of candidates- this is the best they could come up with? Two of these candidates are bearcats, one of which who lives in Maryville and the other who's hardly been out the door.
It's great to see that a good chunk of money was used in hiring this firm in these hard economic times,if I were one of these outside candidates I'd be wondering what spot I'm in: 3 or 4?
I am ashamed of Northwest State University at the present time. What really is the agenda of the Board of Regents? I received my Masters Degree there.
It is a wonderful school for teachers but I know some students who are rethinking about going there next year.
I agree that this is an odd assortment of finalists, especially considering the involvement of an executive search firm. If these are the finalists, Northwest could've saved thousands of dollars by simply placing a help wanted ad in the newspaper. As a Northwest graduate, I am concerned by the firing of the legal counsel and the impending departures of President Hubbard and the provost. I hope the next president, whomever that may be, is up to the job.
Yes, interesting that the candidates were all pretty much "in the area"......lots of money spent for this nationwide search when your own backyard held most of them.......???? What a waste of money.
